M16

Name

The M16 is the United States military designation for the AR-15 rifle adapted for semi-automatic, three-round burst and full-automatic fire.

AR-15 is a lightweight, 5.56 mm, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed semi-automatic rifle, with a rotating-lock bolt, actuated by direct impingement gas operation. It is manufactured with the extensive use of aluminum alloys and synthetic materials. The name "AR-15" is a Colt registered trademark, which refers only to the semi-automatic rifle.

The M4 carbine is a family of firearms tracing its lineage back to earlier carbine versions of the M16 rifle, all based on the original AR-15 rifle. The M4 is a shorter and lighter variant of the M16A2 assault rifle, with 80% parts commonality.

Description

The M16A4 in the film 'Predator' is used by Billy.

The AR-15 in the film 'Predator' is a 1973 Colt AR-15 Sporter rifle, resembling a XM177 and a USAF GAU-5A, modifed with M16 parts and added grenade launcher, converted to fully automatic.

Made from alloy and both the M16 and AR-15 are standard issue in Predator (film) for special forces in Central America.

M16 variations include M16A1, M16A2, M4A1 and M16A4.

Tactical Uses

Both the M16 and AR-15 are used preliminarily by Dutch, while Billy was equipped with a M16A4 on a mission to rescue hostages from guerrilla territory in Central America.

Both the AR-15 and M4A1 are used by Marines and civilians in the town of Gunnison.
